Shari Hiller explains a color wheel and how it can help when making decorating decisions. The wheel is broken into warm and cool colors. Cool colors--blue, green and violet--are serene and best used in quiet places like bedrooms and offices. Warm colors--red, yellow and orange--are friendly and great used in family rooms, kitchens and dining rooms.

There are three types of color combinations:

  • Monochromatic--one color, different shades, from light to dark. When using a monochromatic scheme, add texture and pattern for interest.
  • Complementary--opposite colors on the wheel, like red/green and orange/blue. When using a complementary scheme, use less of the warm color and incorporate multiple patterns.
  • Neighboring--three colors adjacent on the wheel, like green/blue/violet. When using a neighboring scheme, one color dominates and accessories pick up the remaining two colors.
