If you've been planning a bike tour, then you've probably been wondering what you should pack. It's important to bring just the right amount of clothing and gear to help your tour be comfortable and successful. Too much stuff and you're hauling it all around.
Too little stuff and you run the risk of not being prepared. Here are some good suggestions for what to bring along with you! Clothing
Remember that you're not moving in on your tour. You need to bring enough clothing to get you through without over packing. Obviously inquire about typical weather and plan mostly for that. Do be prepared for inclement weather as well. It's also not how much you take but what stuff you take along. Remember to pack clothes that dry quickly and wick moisture to help protect your body. Clothing can be your last barrier to many things, it's not just decoration on a tour.
Tools
Take the basics for tools, keeping your route in mind. If there will be hills consider a 28-tooth chainring and a 28-tooth rear cog. Riding other terrains might make a completely different list. Can a patch kit for the unexpected flat. You may also want to carry a rivet extractor in case you need to repair your chain during the tour. Ask about SAG support as well.
Other Hints
Remember to keep the weight in check. Let any SAG support carry what they can and know where you can get help if you need it. A map is always a good idea and is usually supplied if you're taking a paid tour. Keeping your load light will help ensure that you have a much more pleasant trip than if you take your kitchen sink!
