Narcolepsy

Recent Narcolepsy Research

Narcolepsy is more common in men, according to a recent study done by the Mayo clinic. Narcolepsy is a widespread disorder affecting and afflicting more than a hundred thousand people in America. It causes excessive daytime sleepiness and disturbed nighttime sleep.

The study was aimed at determining gender and age specifications of the disorder. Results revealed a higher incidence among men and often began in the late twenties.

Another common event for narcolepsy sufferers is cataplexy, a severe weakness and loss of control over the muscles. Any strong emotion - laughter, anger, grief - can bring on a cataplexy attack. It's not uncommon for the victim to lose all strength in his limbs and fall to the ground helpless.

But this recent study also revealed that a subgroup of narcolepsy victims do not suffer from cataplexy. The researchers deemed this worthy of further study.

Michael Silber, M.D., a Mayo Clinic neurologist and sleep disorders specialist and principal author of the study said that narcolepsy is not a rare disorder. The disorder occurs in countries around the world with varying frequency.

Narcolepsy can cause many problems. It makes working difficult and interferes with everyday living as well as social functions. Research is ongoing and recent months have made several breakthroughs. Other research into the parts of the brain that control sleep and sleepiness may also contribute to the knowledge about the causes and treatment of narcolepsy.

At present, there is no cure for narcolepsy. The disorder can be partially controlled by lifestyle changes and drug therapy. Lifestyle changes include keeping a regular sleep schedule, having daytime naps and avoiding, when possible, anything that may over-stimulate the emotions and bring on an attack of cataplexy.
