Main Hoon.. was a dream come true
what made you say yes to Masti?
“Masti was a safe film” Amrita rationally explains “Masti involves a lot of top stars. If the film does not do well, God forbid, then no single individual is going to be held responsible for it. Nobody can come up to me and say the film flopped because of you. If it’s turns out to be a success we will all benefit from it. Plus the film had me paired opposite Vivek Oberoi. But the reason that tops all reasons is that it’s a comedy. that’s one of the reasons why I agreed to do it” she explains.
Very rarely does an artiste get to do this kind of role I’m playing a housewife who behaves in a peculiar fashion. Masti is going to be a roller coaster ride. I hope the end product shapes out well Since it was her first time with a comic role did she experience any hurdles obstacles in the process? Playing that role was not so difficult for me. The real challenge will be when I will be playing a comic role again in another film.
How differently I do it so Speaking about director Indra Kumar Amrita says Masti is a new age film the kind that is completely different from the Indra Kumar genre of films. Ishq was the comedy film that he had made. Now it’s Masti. On the sets Indra Kumar was a block of ice—so chilled out! Never once did he scold us or pressurized us. It was wonderful working with him.
How was it working in Main Hoon Na?
Shahrukh Khan was fantastic. For a newcomer like me it was a dream come true. Also Farha is so creative! When she told me that I was playing this college going kind of girl I was wondering whether I would land up looking the same as I did in Ishq Vishk! But the look that she invented for me in the film is absolute contrast to the one I had in Ishq-Vishq. She changed my hair style completely. People will find it difficult to believe that it is me! They will say “Hey is she the same the one who was in Ishq-Vishq”
How was it working with a woman director?
“It was not so much about woman to woman as it was about an actor and director. Farha has worked out all the details to near perfection. She did not leave anything for the last minute”
What is your role in Gaurang Doshi’s Deewar—Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home?
“This film is completely male dominated! I have little to do in the film. I was told about it right from the start and I appreciate their honesty. Also, Deewar was a prestigious film and
What is the storyline of Deewar—Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home about?
“I would not like to reveal anything. The only thing I can say is that it is based on an English film”
Which other films are you excited about?
“I want to do roles that require me to do something more then singing and dancing and speaking frivolous lines. Luckily the roles or rather the characters that I have done so far have definitely had a transition as the film has progressed. Even that tiny role that I did in The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, it had different nuances to it! Every character that I have done has been a journey. And I think it should be like that. It is only then that you can call yourself an actor.
But if people notice your item, number, songs, costumes but miss your performance which is basically why you are here then are just an entertainer and not an actor. I would like to be remembered as an actress and not as an entertainer” Amrita adds “To me performance is more important! One is so critically noticed in the film industry it is not even funny. The audience may not notice your performance but they do notice your nail paint, lipstick, costumes etc. You have to be so perfect.
But I don’t give importance all these things. As I said to me performance is more important. Your performance should be so strong that people just don’t notice the colour of your lipstick and nail polish and that the streak in your hair. If you give importance to these things then it is better to be on the ramp than face the camera”
What do you like to do when you are not giving a shot?
If not busy with work Amrita likes to be at home “Home is where the heart is! I’m a complete home bird” she laughs. Guys who fantasize dating Amrita to a disco—well forget it coz discos are not her scene at all “I hate them! What puts me off is the loud music! It’s so blaring that you cannot even converse with your friends. On top of it there are these blinking lights that literally blind and you cannot even see the person whom you are dancing with. The place is filled with some weird smoke and I’m allergic to it” So what was her idea of a perfect night? “A cozy dinner with friends is what makes me happy. I’m an absolute food freak. I prefer coconut curry and rice to a disco any day”
